Multi-Award winning BIG Nanny’s Hair Products is a family run business which provides amazing hair products for not only Afro hair but all hair types.  We currently have two hair oils that satisfy the needs of hair that is bone straight to beautiful coils, curls and spirals to inspirational kinky gravity defying hair. The Original Oil, is great for thinning hair, it softens and moisturises the hair.  The Kings and Queens also softens the hair but is also super moisturising and quenching for thirsty hair.  The oils contain wonderful plant based ingredients such as Castor oil, Shea Butter and Coconut oil and are free of nasty chemicals.

BIG Nanny herself has been making her hair products for her herself and family for some 69 years  and has perfected her products to give optimum moisture and strength even though they actually contain no water just pure nurturing oils.  Our products have gained the reputation  of being the “must have go to” products for hair that is “ailing” and experiencing issues.   We also provide all the products we use as a family such as single layer Sleep Caps and various hair tools such as our popular “Talawa” Sandalwood & Bamboo Combs and even more popular “Affirmation” Sandalwood Comb.  We use wood combs as they better match our own make up as like us humans wood is a combination of carbon, nitrogen and oxygen and as an added bonus, wood does not cause static unlike your standard plastic combs.  Our Celebration hamper contains all you need to start you off.

Here are some “hair tips” for guidance  on how to get the best results when using our products on your beautiful crown.

Washing Hair

A.  Have you ever tried “pre poo” an hilarious sounding term but a great way of “loading” the hair prior to washing.  Simply oil damp hair, and pop on one of our biodegradable caps for 20-30mins then wash your hair.  Remember, when washing your hair do not use shampoos that strip your hair.  Hair that is completely stripped of its natural oils in the washing process will become dry and even brittle.  If you can, wash once with one application of shampoo and wash well BIG Nanny’s Hair Oil does not build up so this is easier to do.

Applying Oils to Hair and Scalp

B.  Some Trichologists advise that you should not apply oil to your scalp and that the oil will find your scalp eventually after it has been applied to the hair.  My Afro hair is over 2 foot long and the oils flow down my hair shaft not up so this does not work for everyone.  Even if your hair is much shorter this could also still be the case depending upon how your hair coils and curls.  It may indeed not be suitable to use oils on your scalp depending on the type of scalp issues you may have if any.  If you do choose to apply oil to your scalp  make sure that you do not over saturate it so as to block the very follicles you seek to stimulate, just lightly but evenly oil the scalp in a furrow fashion front to back then gently massage the oil into the scalp using the pads of your fingers.  BIG Nanny’s Hair Oils are light so as not to weigh the hair down or clog your follicles and is effective.

Once the hair leaves the scalp it is said to be dead however, you will know that it still responds to heat, cold and humidity.  Make sure you apply oil down the hair shaft from the roots to the ends.  The secret to hair retention is keeping the hair moist and that applies in particular to your hair ends.

Twists and Braids and Braiding Hair

C.  You will probably know that plaiting, twisting and braiding is the best kind of protective styling.  Braiding the hair goes back centuries and twists are an easy way to protect the hair then take down for a hip hairstyle.  Protective styling does what it says on the tin. It protects the hair from the elements and allows it to grow safely.  The most long lasting and effective protective style is braiding and it is commonly used with the addition of synthetic braiding hair.  If you decide to add braiding hair to your hair then there are a few things you should heed in order to avoid doing more harm than good.

  1. If you find that your head itches after your braids are installed, this may be due to the chemicals used in the process of manufacturing the braiding hair.  To avoid this remove the braiding hair from the outer packaging and wash as it is prior to installation using your shampoo and a little apple cider vinegar.  Then condition the braiding hair and hang to drip dry.
  2. Do not braid the fine short  hair (also known as baby hair) around your forehead.  This hair is extremely delicate and is easily lost.
  3. Do not allow your braids to be tight especially at your hair line.  This may cause hair loss known as traction alopecia. Also make sure braids near to your hairline are not heavy as this weight can tease the hair from the follicles.
  4. Oil the braids to wherever your hair is within it.  This can make all the difference to whether or not you retain the added growth when the braids are removed.
  5. Oil your braids before removing them.  It will make the process easier and again avoid breakage and preventable hair loss.

Hair Tools

D.  The hair tools you use on your precious hair is important and needs to be of a high quality and safe.  They must also add value.  Hair tools such as BIG Nanny’s Sandalwood and Bamboo combs and Brushes are a must.  Wood hair tools are at one with your hair and are of course static free and so you should not experience incidental hair loss and breakage.   The single layer satin sleep caps stay on your head at night and help condition your hair while you sleep.

Why does my hair break

E. There is a plethora of reasons why your hair can break particularly Afro hair.  Health reasons such as vitamin deficiency, lack of moisture, lack of care or all three.  Vitamin D deficiency being one and in women, menopause can affect the condition of your hair.  Vitamin D deficiency is prevalent in people of colour who reside in European countries due to the lack of sun.  Many women see a tangible change in their hair when going through the stages of menopause and so it would be wise to consult your doctor if you are experiencing excessive shedding or breakage in order to rule these out.

To give your hair the best chance to thrive, ensure you keep it moist to prevent breakage, particularly your hair ends.  Always oil and/or mist with water prior to manipulating your hair.  Remember finger detangling is good however, combing the hair does help to remove shedded hair that would cause knots, which in turn then causes intact hair to become detached. Combing your hair with a wide tooth comb also stimulates the the scalp so promoting growth.  Simply comb your hair gently from the hair ends up ensuring that you oil and/or mist the hair with water first.

How important is Water

Water is quite simply the most important thing our body needs, we can survive for some time without food but not without water.

Some Afro hair love and thrive with water others find that the shrinkage that water causes actually makes the hair more difficult to manage when dry.  I personally apart from drinking it etc. mostly only use water when washing my hair and find that BIG Nanny’s Original Oil which contain no water is sufficient without it, so allowing my hair to loosen it’s waves and curls.  It’s a case of finding what’s best for you and your hair type.
